Aston Villa ‘more exciting than Leeds’ claim made amid Kalvin Phillips transfer link

Hello and welcome to a round-up of all the latest Aston Villa stories from BirminghamLive on Sunday 27th March 2022.

Kalvin claim made

Aston Villa have once again been linked with Leeds United midfield dynamo Kalvin Phillips. The Times claimed last week that Villa were prepared to pay £60million for the England international while offering him a ‘huge’ salary.

Of course, if a player of Phillips’ quality were to arrive on the market, Villa would not be the only suitors and West Ham, who had offers for the 26-year-old turned down in the last transfer window, are likely to come. to be interested. Manchester United, Liverpool and Newcastle have also been touted as potential destinations.

As for Leeds, it is claimed that they have no desire to sell their crown jewel, quite the contrary in fact. They are said to be preparing a new contract for a player who last signed new terms in 2019 – when he was heavily linked with a move to Villa.

Gerrard rolls back the years

Aston Villa head coach Steven Gerrard has been praised for being ‘one of the only players who can still run’ after making a goal return at Anfield on Saturday afternoon for Liverpool Legends.

The former Reds captain won what was described as a first-half ‘stone’ penalty which Gerrard, of course, took and sent the visiting Barcelona goalkeeper the wrong way in the process of conversion. Despite the 41-year-old’s best efforts, Liverpool were beaten 2-1 in the charity game.

This result did not diminish the performance of the Villa boss, however, with Gerrard named as one of the best after leading the team for 90 minutes. It wasn’t the first time the long-serving Liverpool player has returned home, having also featured in the legends’ last game against AC Milan in 2019.

Campbell claims Liverpool

Aston Villa have been branded a “middle job” by Alastair Campbell after the reporter hosted a Q&A with manager Steven Gerrard and former Liverpool team-mate Jamie Carragher.

Friday night’s event raised funds for Football for Change, an initiative for footballers and business leaders to help support disadvantaged young people across the UK. It was held in Liverpool ahead of a Liverpool Legends game against Barcelona which the pair played on Saturday afternoon.

Gerrard scored past the Kop again in that match at Anfield after winning and then converting a penalty. The 41-year-old, however, couldn’t prevent the Reds losing 2-1 to a Barcelona side managed by Rivaldo, who scored the winning goal in the second half.

Bailey’s verdicts divided

Aston Villa supporters are significantly divided over Leon Bailey’s future at the club after the Jamaican international starred on the international stage earlier this week.

The 24-year-old summer signing played the full 90 minutes for the Reggae Boyz against El Salvador on Thursday, which was the winger’s first appearance from the final whistle since November. Bailey also made eight key passes and hit the post in a man of the match display in the 1-1 draw. Villa fans are unsure whether this will translate to the Premier League, however.
