Bears add more top ratings, Rogers breaks two records

Bears tackle day two Saturday

STANFORD– At the end of the first day of the Stanford Invitational, California Athletics left Cobb Track and Angell Field with 7 new program top 10s and 15 personal bests, in addition to setup and meet records set by senior Camryn Rogers in the hammer throw.

Rogers’ mark of 74.18m (243-4) was good enough to win the event by a margin of 21ft, instantly putting her atop the NCAA season best list and third in the world after the first pitch of their 2022 outdoor campaign. Cal also fielded the second-place winner in the women’s hammer throw, as a junior Anna Purchase added to his PR with a throw of 67.77m (222-4) to take control of Cal’s second best all-time mark.

Senior Ezinne Abba went on his own winning streak in the 100m, clocking 11.33 in the preliminaries and 11.35 in the final to clinch the title for Cal. Behind her was a classmate Maisie Stevens, including 11.43 in the preliminaries (followed by an 11.52 in the final) was good enough to propel her to fifth place in program history. In the Men’s 1500m Invitational, Year Two Garrett MacQuiddy clocked 3:41.62, seventh fastest in Cal history and the fastest collegiate runner in the field as he finished just 0.54 behind Olympian Ryoma Aoki.

Amari Turner again starred in the women’s pole vault, breaking her personal best to reach a new peak height of 4.05m (13-3.5), good for fifth place all-time at Cal. Meanwhile, smooth krissy placed second in the women’s shot put, throwing a distance of 15.47m (50-9.25) to rank sixth in Cal history; on the track, Jada Hicks won his own second-place title in the 100 m hurdles, also moving up to sixth place in program history with a time of 13.63. Ultimately, Erin Archibeck made his Cal 5000m debut, posting the ninth fastest time in program history with a finish of 16:08.05.

MacQuiddy wasn’t the only Cal man to claim a top spot, as Hakim McMorris jumped 7.58m (24-10.5) for second place and a PR on his 2022 debut, Di’Niko Bates (14.22) took third place in the 110m hurdles, Will Sornberg (52.83) finished third in the 400m hurdles and Jake Porter placed third in the discus throw with a personal best 47.06m (154-4).
