CSU mishandles last-second field goal attempt in Utah State loss – The Denver Post

LOGAN, Utah – Connor Coles scored four career-best field goals, including one from 34 yards to give Utah State a two-goal lead five minutes from time, and the Aggies held off Colorado State 26 -24 Friday evening.

But the Rams certainly provided an assist, as they completely mismanaged the final moments of the game with a rushed field goal that sailed wide.

CSU Rams quarterback Todd Centeio found Ty McCullouch for a first down on the Utah State 24-yard line with 11 seconds left and his team two behind. But with the clock temporarily halted as officials moved the chains, the Rams inexplicably rushed the goal unit onto the field rather than poking the ball to stop the clock.

Hurrying to kick off before time ran out, Cayden Camper’s kick went far to the left, and the Aggies survived to give CSU their first conference loss of the season.

Coles was a perfect four-for-four on the evening with kicks from 45, 30, 42 and 34 yards, his latest giving the Aggies (5-2, 3-1 Mountain West) a 26-17 lead. .

Centeio, who had 282 yards, needed 81 seconds to rip 73 yards into the field and respond with a 13-yard pass to Gary Williams who cut Utah’s lead to two points. Centeio and the Rams (3-4, 2-1) nearly pulled off a stun, taking a final possession for 61 yards in 44 seconds, but instead had to wonder what could have happened if they had just taken their time. .

Utah State started hot with Luke Bonner, 233 yards passing, connecting with Derek Wright on a pair of touchdowns including an over the shoulder catch for a 38 yard touchdown. Deven Thompkins had six catches for 104 yards – his seventh 100-yard game.

Bonner suffered eight sacks – a season high for the Colorado State defense – for a loss of 52 yards, interrupted four passes and was intercepted once.

The teeming Rams also made 13 tackles for a loss. Between sacks and tackles behind the line, Colorado State forced Utah State for 113 yards.

David Bailey ran for a pair of short touchdowns for Colorado State and gained 159 yards on 30 carries. The footage is his career best with the Rams, despite having a 181-yard game at Boston College.
