PFF ranks Colts as having 2nd best RB unit in NFL heading into 2022 season

According to PFF, the Indianapolis Colts have the second-best running back unit in the league heading into the 2022 campaign– only trailing the Cleveland Browns:

After a strong close to his rookie season in 2020, Jonathan Taylor claimed last year as the NFL’s top running back with an 87.0 PFF rating that led all players at the position. He’s the type of running back Indianapolis doesn’t necessarily want to get off the field, but the Colts have the depth to feel comfortable giving him a rest here and there.

Nyheim Hines is one of the best out-of-the-back receiving threats in the NFL while still posing a threat as a runner. And offseason acquisition Phillip Lindsay will be looking to bounce back from a sluggish season in Houston last year. Lindsay had PFF ratings above 75.0 in three consecutive seasons with the Broncos from 2018-2020.

Of course, the Browns feature a pair of former Pro Bowlers Nick Chubb and hunt kareemwhile by Ernest Johnson shone in limited one-time duty last season.

Meanwhile, the Colts reigned NFL First-Team All-Pro Jonathan Taylorwho was the best running back in all of football last season, with a monstrous MVP-caliber campaign, as well as an electric reception Nyheim Hines (with veteran Philip Lindsay or potentially darkhorse Ty’son Williams as top contenders for their ‘change of pace’ 3rd-place running back – with the 2nd-year rusher Deon Jackson).

One could make a reasonable argument that anyone remotely capable behind Taylor has ever helped build the best backfield in the league — and I’m not sure they’re necessarily wrong. That being said, Hines isn’t just your average fullback, as he’s one of the NFL’s most dangerous and fastest running backs in today’s game.

The fact that he didn’t have a banner last year shouldn’t reflect his true talent capacity. After all, it’s not his fault that the former Colts quarterback Carson Wentz refused to throw under or control his running backs – an area where Hines really shines.

That should change with the new veteran starting quarterback matt ryanwho’s not only more accurate, but more willing to just make easy throws and move sticks compared to his Colts predecessor, as Hines could be set for some sort of rebounding season:

Of course, his workload will always be reduced simply by sharing the same backfield with young franchise workaholic Taylor, who led the league in rushes (332), rushing yards (1,811) and rushing touchdowns. (18) during this past season.

However, Hines still has plenty of room to be a well-used playmaker on the Colts’ offense, especially if they get creative with him in the slot, on backhands, throw sweeps, screens, etc. . Let’s not forget that there were even times when he and Taylor shared the same pitch on certain plays in 2021 situationally and with great success:

Others may still have the No. 1 Browns in this sort of ranking, but Taylor is the NFL’s reigning ‘Triple Crown King’ until proven otherwise, and Hines would be a great point guard in n any backfield – because it was just underutilized in 2021, that should change.

To me, given the talent and dynamic ability of their “1-2 punch,” the Colts should be the best.
